Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

St. Charles reads differently depending on which side of the Fox River you land on, and the rental map splits about the same way. These four areas are the ones worth comparing:

The Randall Road Corridor
Randall Road is the 31 mile county highway that forms the western spine of the Fox Valley suburbs, and the stretch at the St. Charles and Geneva line carries most of the area's daily errands. Geneva Commons, a Meijer, the Kane County Fairgrounds and Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital all sit within about a mile of each other here. Prairie Winds sits just west of that stretch on twenty acres north of Bricher Road.

Downtown St. Charles
Two miles northeast, the historic core straddles the Fox River along Main Street. Hotel Baker and the Arcada Theatre anchor the blocks on either side of the water, the Fox River Trail runs through, and the city fills the streets each October for Scarecrow Weekend, now in its forty-first year. Rentals here are older and closer together, which suits anyone who wants to walk to a show or a riverfront restaurant.

West St. Charles and Campton Hills
Head west past Randall Road and the density drops off quickly into preserve land and open country. LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve covers 459 acres with roughly nine miles of trails, Ferson Creek, the Creek Bend Nature Center and the trailhead for the Great Western Trail. Otter Cove Aquatic Park sits nearby on Campton Hills Road. Housing here sits on larger lots with more open ground between developments.

North Geneva
Directly south across the municipal line, north Geneva puts the Metra station on the Union Pacific West line within reach along with the Third Street shopping district and Peck Farm Park. The station runs direct to Ogilvie Transportation Center, roughly 35 rail miles east. The Geneva Commons center technically sits on this side of the line as well, which is part of why the border here barely registers day to day.

Founded in 1834 on the banks of the Fox River, St. Charles has leaned on that setting ever since, right down to the slogan a resident won a 1969 contest with: the Pride of the Fox. For renters, that identity shows up in four concrete ways:

A City Built on the Fox River
The Fox runs straight through the middle of town, and the Fox River Trail follows it north and south through St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia. Pottawatomie Park puts paddle boats, an observation tower and a nine hole golf course on the riverbank. From Prairie Winds, that whole stretch is about two miles northeast.

One of the Tri-Cities
City directories grouping St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia as the Tri-Cities date back to 1910, and the name has stuck ever since. The practical effect is that three downtowns, three park systems and three sets of restaurants are all within a few miles of each other, and residents move freely among them. St. Charles itself held 33,081 residents at the 2020 census, so none of the three feels large.

Randall Road at the Front Door
Randall Road runs 31.4 miles from Aurora north to Crystal Lake and serves as the main north and south retail corridor in western Kane County. Living a block off it means a grocery run, a hospital visit and a shopping trip can share one turn out of the driveway. Illinois Routes 38 and 64 handle east and west travel from the same point.

Preserve Land Two Miles North
LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve sits about two miles up the road with 459 acres, roughly nine miles of trails, an 1840s farmstead museum, a restored one-room schoolhouse and a dry hill prairie that the state has designated an Illinois Nature Preserve. Few suburbs of this size keep that much intact prairie and woodland this close to a retail corridor. The Great Western Trail starts there.

Living at Prairie Winds means downtown St. Charles and the Fox River are about two miles out and Geneva Commons is a short walk. Popular spots nearby include:

  • Pottawatomie Park
  • Fox River Trail
  • LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve
  • Arcada Theatre
  • Hotel Baker
  • Geneva Commons
  • Kane County Flea Market at the Kane County Fairgrounds
  • Otter Cove Aquatic Park
  • Pottawatomie Golf Course
  • Fabyan Forest Preserve and the Fabyan Windmill
  • Peck Farm Park
  • Classic Cinemas Charlestowne 18

Scarecrow Weekend fills downtown St. Charles every October, and the fairgrounds sit roughly half a mile north on Randall Road.

Commuters at Prairie Winds reach Aurora in roughly ten miles, and Randall Road covers the entire distance, since its southern end is in Aurora itself. Kirk Road and Illinois Route 31 offer two more routes south. Major employers within that commute include:

  • Rush Copley Medical Center (Aurora)
  • Mercy Medical Center (Aurora)
  • Aurora University (Aurora)
  • Hollywood Casino Aurora (Aurora)
  • Waubonsee Community College (main campus in nearby Sugar Grove, plus two Aurora campuses)
  • Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (nearby Batavia)
  • ALDI US corporate headquarters (nearby Batavia)
  • Suncast Corporation (nearby Batavia)
  • Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital (nearby Geneva)
  • Kane County government offices (county seat in nearby Geneva)
  • Bison Gear and Engineering (St. Charles)
  • System Sensor (St. Charles)
  • St. Charles Community Unit School District 303 (St. Charles)

At Prairie Winds, the shortest commute of all may be Delnor Hospital, less than a mile south on the same road.

The Prairie Winds amenity package begins with something most apartment communities cannot offer, a private front door, and builds outward from there:

Private Entrances and Attached Garages
Every home is townhome-style, with its own entrance at ground level and a heated attached one or two car garage with remote access. Parking happens inside the home rather than across a shared lot, and there is no common corridor between the door and the driveway. Across twenty-five two-story buildings holding 250 homes on twenty acres, the community reads more like a small neighborhood than a complex.

A Fitness Center and Aquatic Center That Never Close
Private electronic access keeps the 4,000 square foot fitness center, the indoor aquatic center and the billiards room open twenty-four hours a day. The aquatic center holds a lap pool and a hot tub with locker rooms alongside, so a swim works around a night shift as easily as a lunch break. In summer the outdoor pool opens with cabanas and a hammock park.

Two Ponds, Walking Paths and a Lakeside Firepit
Walking paths wrap two private ponds on the grounds, and a natural gas firepit with a stone seating wall gives the property an evening gathering point. A patio nearby holds custom stone grilling stations and an entertainment center. Prairie Winds residents with dogs also get a fenced bark park stocked with agility equipment, which pairs well with the Fox River Trail two miles away.

Gourmet Kitchens Built for Actual Cooking
Kitchens pair granite counters and a stone backsplash with a stainless steel appliance package, including a double-door refrigerator with ice and water and a self-cleaning oven. Cabinetry comes in white or espresso, and a pantry sits within reach of the work area. Nine foot tray ceilings and a designer electric fireplace carry the same finish level into the living space.
